Essential Oil Education with Dr Joy

Hello there, it's Dr Joy Bowles here from Australia, delighted to be taking part in a live interview and Q&A with the Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists in September2025. One of my science heroes, Professor Julius Sumner Miller, wrote that his hope was to "...stir your imagination, awaken your interest, arouse your curiosity, enliven your spirit - all with the purpose of bringing you to ask... why is it so?"

While we've already planned some interview questions on how to use aromachemistryto inform your clinical practice, we'd love to include your "why is it so?" questions. Please send them through in advance, so I've got time to reflect on how best to answer them.
If you want a refresher for your aromachemistry knowledge, I encourage you to sign up to my Membership program on Teachable which gives you access to my two Refreshing Chemistry modules, plus everything else on my site, while you stay subscribed - and you can cancel any time.

Live Interview format webinar in September on the following topics:
  • Questions to be asked in advance from our membership
  • Myths and misconceptions around "chemical" in natural health
  • Comparing oils based on dominant chemistry
  • Using chemistry to inform client casework
  • How can GC/MS profiles provide a deeper understanding

Biography

Dr E. Joy Bowles (PhD, BSc Hons) has been involved in aromatherapy as an essential oil science educator since 1991, and is most well known for her book "The Chemistry of Aromatherapeutic Oils". For her doctorate in 2007, she conducted studies on the effects of essential oils on cognitive function in dementia (no statistically significant effect for typical dermal doses used in aromatherapy), and in 2017 started teaching online, running the Aromatherapy Journal Club for 5 years.

She is currently creating and teaching the Constituent Spotlight series for the Tisserand Institute, and collaborating in the development of aromatherapy research reporting guidelines with the Aromatherapy Research Quality Appraisal Taskforce (aka ARQAT pronounced Ar-kart). She has presented at NAHA and Botanica conferences, and released “Dr Joy’s Aromatherapy” in 2020 to answer the questions about how essential oils can be used for Psyche, Skin and Medicine.
