About the CFA
The Canadian Federation of Aromatherapists was formed in early 1993 by a group of individuals
concerned with the tremendous growth and popularity of Aromatherapy. These individuals, from varying
backgrounds, recognized that there was no governing body or organization for the general public to
call for information, or to verify that those claiming to be Aromatherapists were indeed qualified.
They felt there needed to be a central number where the public could obtain information on
aromatherapy products and education.A decision was made to form the CFA and after much careful planning and work by the founding
members, the organization was born.
The CFA mission was established to foster continuing growth, quality and high standards of
education and practice within the aromatherapy profession and provide on-going information about
quality of aromatherapy products and services to the public.
The CFA Education Committee was formed in 1999 and over the years has set standards for
certification, safety and professional conduct for its members. A core curriculum has been
established that our schools must follow and writing the CFA National Exam is a requirement
for membership. Our members are entitled to use the legal designation CAHP (Certified Aromatherapy
Health Professional) which is only available and applicable to CFA members.
2009 heralds a very exciting year for aromatherapy and the CFA. We have updated the national curriculum for education to the highest standards practiced anywhere. To graduate from a CFA approved program, students must complete 400 educational hours and pass the standardized national CFA exam.
Also, to maintain a membership in good standing, all members must complete ongoing educational programs and be active in aromatherapy work. Our CEU's (Credit Education Units) are applied to a large variety of courses, retreats, workshops, lectures, across Canada and ensure that CFA members are continually increasing their breadth of knowledge.
